IT recruitment 'still in the dark ages

Poorly managed recruitment is crippling growth in the UK IT industry, according to a report from management consultancy, Elgin Scott.
The survey, which polled 200 MDs and senior managers at some of the IT industry's fastest-growing firms, found that firms are making the IT skills shortage worse by failing to plan and budget adequately for recruitment. The report claims firms can waste up to £500,000 per year on what it calls 'unplanned recruitment'.
The survey found that 62 per cent of IT firms do not include recruitment in their financial business plans, while 55 per cent of managers admitted they have no idea how much it costs to recruit staff. Almost a quarter admitted to having appointing poor candidates.
Kay McGregor of Elgin Scott concluded that despite the industry's cutting-edge image, IT firms are still in the dark ages when it comes to recruitment practices.
