ICI CIO blames users and vendors for state of IT

Chief information officer (CIO), Dr Richard Sykes, has been at ICI for 30 years. He is leaving in September but has learnt many important lessons about the IT industry and its failings - at both vendor and user level.
Speaking to Silicon.com's Jon Bernstein in a video interview, Sykes lays the blame for the "state" of the IT industry on users and vendors alike, claiming both are guilty of eulogising technology itself, rather than exploring the commercial benefits and applications which IT offers.
Sykes claimed vendors do this because their products do not live up to their own hype, whereas end users lack the training, or savvy, required to apply technology to business models.
He claims the main piece of advice he offered his replacement as CIO at ICI was to: "Spend the vast majority of your time with the leadership of ICI businesses and help them understand the capabilities of these new technologies and help them decide the priorities and drive their businesses forward using these new technologies."
You can watch the whole interview in the Petrochemicals and Pharmaceuticals Channel.
