DoubleClick tracks online and real-world consumers

Banner ad company DoubleClick is using cookies allied with a database of people's real-world information to follow users movements online.
DoubleClick recently bought Abacus Direct Corporation - owner of a massive consumer database - which includes customer names, addresses and purchase history, in both the online and real-world.
By tying this in with cookie technology, DoubleClick claims it will be able to tell online advertisers far more about the kind of people viewing their adverts.
The next stage of the project is to recruit more Web sites into the network - thereby increasing the information held on customers.
